Baptisms are arranged directly with the Parish Priest. The following remarks refer to the baptism of children under the age of seven. Children aged between seven and fourteen follow a modified form of RCIA and those over 14 follow RCIA in its entirety.
As far as children under 7 are concerned, the parents of the child must speak with the Parish Priest and request this Sacrament for their child. The normal manner is to first make an approach to priest after Mass on a Sunday, even before the baby is born. That way priest and parents will have time to prepare for this important day in the life of your family, most especially for the child and their parents. If someone other than the parents have legal responsibility for the child, they may make the request for the baptism of the child; if the circumstances are such that it is possible, then the parents should be included in this discussion also.
Infants are to be baptised as soon as possible after birth. Baptisms take place on Sundays, after 11 am Mass
.
Catholic parents seeking baptism for their child will be practising Catholics themselves, regularly attending Sunday Mass and registered with the parish. Persons who are not parishioners of Saint Paul's will need the permission of their own parish to celebrate baptism here in this parish. With that permission, you are very welcome to have the baptism celebrated here.
Godparents are Catholics, at least 16 years of age, who have themselves received the sacrament of Confirmation. One Godparent is enough, though a maximum of two - one male, one female - is allowed. A Godparent who is not a Catholic is allowed provided they have been baptised in another Christian Community and that they stand along with a Catholic Godparent. Godparents who are Catholic are expected to be practising.
