Confirmation for Children
All baptised Catholic children are to be confirmed.
The Sacrament of Confirmation is the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the baptised.
In the Archdiocese of Glasgow, of which our parishes are a part, children are, at present, confirmed when aged 7 or 8, in the month of November, at Primary 4 stage.
All parents must meet, as directed, with parish clergy prior to the reception of this Sacrament by their child. As the children are so young, it is not normally possible for a child to receive this sacrament without the parent or the person who looks after the child making clear to parish clergy it is their wish.
Children are specifically taught about this Sacrament at school on a daily basis in the months prior to the reception of the sacrament. This may include material brought home from school to be completed with parents or carers.
The parish also provides a pre confirmation club for the children which meets, at present, on four Sundays prior to reception of the Sacrament . Full, specific, details are announced each year.
Each child to be confirmed will need a Sponsor. The Catholic godparent from baptism would make a very good sponsor, but that may not be possible. Sponsors are to be Catholics, at least 16 years of age, and themselves Confirmed. They should be a good example of Christian living to the child they sponsor and so should look closely at their own lives to see if they live in accordance with the values of the Gospel and the teaching of the Church.
